Ana (25 years) leaves Manila to return to the island of her childhood, the Catanduanes. She needs to recover of Manila, deadly and vital bro- th of 25 million people. In fact, there is no return, she finds in the island the strengh of a landscape, a place that is no longer hers, the shadow of her childhood, a woman who tells her smoothly the course of days but also the violence around. Ana announces her departure for Chicago.
The film begins with the announcement of the death of Ana in Chicago. Her sister, Karina, confides to her friend Rico, on the places that frequented Ana in Manila.
Note of intent
This short film mixing fiction and documentary responds to a dramatic need, that of a departure from Manila, which brews and crushes millions of bodies coming from the islands of the Philippine archipelago. Manila is not the subject of the film, it is itself the dark force that pushes to the exit.
The film precisely follows the journey of Ana from Manila to a wild island of the archipelago, marked by four stations: Manila, the Mayon volcano, the island of Catanduanes, the jungle, where Ana announces her departure to Chicago.
The narrative of the return to the island is interspersed with scenes of memory and impressions, those of Ana haunted by its lost landscape and by visions of Manila.
In fact, there is no return, there are only depatures, or absences of departure.
The characters speak tagalog or english, depending on the situation, the intimacy of the meetings, or the progress toward childhood places.
Two versions of the film are available: one with Frenchsubtitles, the second with English subtitles. « The Manila » poem, « house of echoes » in the film, is said in French.
Manila Bay is a logical inverse to that of cult films of the Philippine cinema that retraces the destructive journey, without loophole, from an island of the Philippine archipelago to the urban monster that is Manila.
Manila is the attractor of this great movement of bodies coming from the islands, intensified by the economic survival, and which continues overseas. It is to enter the market.
But the islands are never lost sight, even in the most far away from the exile, would it only be fragmented memories, as is the Philippine archipelago. It may be edenic moments of a childhood in the landscape. When yet these same islands can slide to the sea and to death under the shock of recurring typhoons of the Pacific, or survive in an immemorial deprivation.
If Manila sponges our time, that is because it is also mirror of the world which is coming, in the shadows of its possible endings.
